Abstract

[Addition to 16,764/09.] Reverberatory furnaces.-In a modification of the furnace described in the parent Specification, in which a single furnace for heating steel or iron plates, angle-irons, &c. is employed, the supply of heating-gases from one or more combustion spaces or fire-boxes, and their path through the heating-chamber, are controlled by dampers arranged within ducts at the side of the furnace opposite the fire-boxes and at the ends of the furnace, the ducts communicating with a main flue extending longitudinally under the hearth. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, gases from the furnaces A enter the heating-chamber B, through which their passage is controlled by dampers F, J, arranged respectively in ducts E, I leading to a flue G beneath the hearth H. Instead of furnaces having grates as shown for the production of heating- gases, combustion chambers may be used in which pulverized solid fuel, producer gas, or other combustible in the form of gas, vapour, or spray, is burnt.
