Abstract

821,496. Coke ovens. KOPPERS G.m.b.H., H. June 6, 1958 [Aug. 16, 1957], No. 18091/58. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). In a twin-flued coke oven in which a portion of the waste gases from the heating flue 1 in which combustion is to take place is passed into the flue 2 at 3 and recirculated through the port 5, a rich gas nozzle 6 is located in the flue 1 laterally of the port 5 and extends upwardly into the flue 1 far enough to form beneath it a mixing chamber in which combustion air from an inlet 8 in the base 11 of the flue can mix with the recirculated waste gas before mixing with the rich gas to produce an extended flame and reduce the deposition of soot. The direction of air and waste gas flow may be reversed at intervals and the flue 2 with nozzle 7 and air inlet 9 be used for combustion. The part of the nozzles projecting above the base 11 of the flues 1 and 2 may be of enlarged cross-section, Fig. 4, and may comprise masonry shields 12, 13 respectively of similar height to the nozzles 6 and 7 shown in Fig. 1.
