[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a regenerative coke oven with vertical heating flues in the side walls supplied with fuel and air for combustion at their lower ends, means are provided whereby combustion products from the upper parts of the flues are returned to the lower part in a circuit comprising the fuel gas conduit. As applied to a coke oven of the Becker type having vertical heating flues 12, Fig. 2, connected by cross-over flues 13 and supplied at the lower ends with rich gas through ducts 19, the latter are connected at their lower ends by a conduit 28. The flues 12 on either side of the oven 10 are employed alternately as combustion flues and when gas is being supplied through adjustable nozzles 30 to the ducts 19 and the left-hand flues 12, products of combustion are withdrawn from the right-hand flues 12 down the ducts 19 and 28 to mix with the rich gas supplied to the base of the combustion flues. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the vertical flues 61 are each divided by a partition 60 provided with a duct 63 extending downwardly to communicate at the lower end with the rich gas passages 66. Gas supplied by the nozzles 67 to the lower ends of the ducts 66 withdraws gases from the upper ends of the combustion flues 61 and returns them to the lower ends of the combustion flues mixed with fuel gas. Fig. 3 shows a further modification in which rich gas is supplied to the lower ends of the vertical combustion flues from a conduit 43. The flues 41 at the ends of the oven are shut off from the cross-over flues by dampers 46 and the combustion products from these flues are withdrawn through passages 52 by rich gas jets supplied by nozzles 50 from a main 48 and delivered into the conduit 43 from which the mixture of rich gas and combustion products passes to the fuel gas nozzles 45 at the base of the heating flues.
