Abstract
552,789. Coke ovens. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Koppers Co.). Jan. 27, 1942, No. 1142. [Class 51 (ii)] In a battery of regenerative horizontal coke ovens with vertical combustion flues in the heating walls, firing is effected by regeneratively heated lean gas with which is mixed a small quantity of rich gas at a point intermediate the lean gas generators and the lean gas inlets to the combustion flues or as it enters the combustion flues. Firing of the ovens may be effected by rich or lean gas and when rich gas is employed the regeneratively heated air may be diluted with lean gas as it enters the combustion flues. Fig. 2 shows a portion of a Becker oven with the invention applied thereto. The division walls 16 of the regenerators 14, 15 are provided with two series of vertical rich gas ducts 25, 41 in staggered relation, the ducts 25 discharging at the base of the flues 13 while the ducts 41 discharge into the passages which receive the regeneratively heated air and lean gas passing through the ducts 17, 18 below the level of the bottom of the flues 13. When firing with rich gas only, the gas passes from the main 31 through valve controlled pipes 32 to the header 26 in the oven mat 21 and into vertical pipes in the mat provided with calibrated jet plugs leading to the vertical ducts 25 and heating flues 13. Air for combustion is supplied from both sets of regenerators 14, 15. When lean gas only is employed, the lean gas passes from a main 38 through ducts 19 to the regenerators 14 and thence to the ports 18 leading into the flues 13. Air for combustion is supplied to the regenerators 15 and through ducts 17 to the flues 13. When the lean gas has a calorific value which is insufficient to produce efficient heating of the ovens, it may be mixed with a small quantity of rich gas which is supplied from a main 45 through valve controlled pipes 44, headers 42 in the mat 21 and vertical pipes in the mat provided with calibrated jet plugs to the vertical ducts 41 and ducts receiving the supplies of lean gas and air through passages 18, 17 connected to the regenerators 14, 15. In an alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 7, one set of vertical rich ducts 60 only is provided in the partition wall 62 between the regenerators adapted to be supplied from a header 64 having calibrated jet plugs 68 when rich gas only is employed and from a header 65 having calibrated jet plugs 69 with small orifices when rich gas is supplied to mix with the lean gas at the base af the heating flues. When the ovens taper in width from the coke side to the pusher side of the battery the sizes of the jets in the plugs are graduated accordingly to effect graduated heating throughout the length of the oven. A valve-controlled connection 50, Fig. 2, is provided between the lean gas main 38 and the rich gas main 45 so that when rich gas firing is employed, the main 45 is supplied with lean gas which may be led to the vertical ducts 41 to dilute the air as it enters the base of the heating flues and mixes wih rich gas from the vertical ducts 25 and main 31.
