[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a verticallyfiued coke oven in which groups of flues in adjacent heating-walls are connected bv cross-over flues 16 as described in Specification 232,173, [Class 51 (ii)], combustion is controlled at the gas and air inlets to the flues, and the upper ports 18, the horizontal collectors 17, and the cross-over flues 16 are so dimensioned that their crosssectional areas are substantially greater than the combined areas of the inlet ports of the groups of flues to which they are connected. In the oven shown, which can be heated alternatively by rich and lean gas, there are two end groups of pairs of flues, and eight intermediate groups of four flues each. All the flues are of the same width measured along the length of the wall, but increase in size at right angles to the length in accordance with the taper of the oven. The inlet ports of the end group at the coke side of the battery are larger in size than those of the end group at the pusher side, and these in turn are larger than the ports of the intermediate groups, which decrease in size from the coke to the pusher side of the battery. Regulation of the supplies of gas and air is effected by pairs of damper blocks 33, supported on seats 381 at the tops of the ports 27, 28, and of the form shown in Fig. 8. Alternate partitions 19 in the heating- walls are longer than the intermediate ones, and are flared at their upper ends to equalize the flow courses for the different flues of a group. The ports 18 for the flues of the intermediate groups are all of the same size, while those of the end groups are made somewhat larger, to accommodate a greater flow of combustion products. The cross-sectional areas of the collectors 17 and the cross-over flues 16 are varied along the heating-wall to correspond with the variations in size of the gas and air inlet ports. Dimensions of the various ports and passages are given in the Specification. Rich gas, when used, is supplied through the conduit 40 and nozzles 41, and the invention is also described in connection with an underfired oven.
