In a coke oven in which the distillation chamber has a trapezoidal shape in horizontal cross-section and horizontal distribution ducts of uniform cross-section are provided in the lower part of the oven for the supply of gas to the heating flues and the discharge of combustion products therefrom, these ducts are provided at various points with devices for reducing their effective cross-sectional area so as to cause a drop in the pressure of the gases, whereby a greater delivery of gas to the flues running perpendicular to the wider part of the chamber and a smaller delivery of gas to the flues running perpendicular to the narrower part of the chamber may be ensured. In Fig. 1, poor gas is supplied through horizontal ducts 5 under the control of reversing valves 4 to regenerators 6, 7 communicating with heating flues 35<SP>1</SP>-35n, and the combustion products discharged through parallel ducts to a main flue 10 under the control of reversing valves 9. The effective cross-section of the ducts is controlled by vertically-adjustable refractory elements 8, Fig. 2, which are introduced into the ducts through openings 9a. In a modification, Fig. 3, each refractory element 14 is formed with an extension 15 carrying a head 36 which controls an opening 17 between the duct 5 and one of the regenerator compartments 16. In other modifications, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), the openings between the ducts and the regenerator compartments are controlled by separate needle valves or movable registers.
