Coke ovens.-In coke ovens or other gas.fired furnaces in which heating is effected by vertical combustion flues, the heating gases pass upwards towards the top of each flue and return as burnt gases down the same flue, leaving at the bottom end through a heat exchange apparatus. In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 two burner nozzles I‹ direct the flames along the walls of the flue next the adjacent ovens, and the heating gases are guided along their up and downflow paths by ribs B‹. Reversal of flow at the upper end is facilitated by shaping the top of the flue to guide the two streams of gases inwardly. The nozzles I‹ form the tips of a recuperator element similar to that shown in Fig. 3 for a flue having a single burner nozzle supplied with rich gas. This element is in the form of a three-tube structure carried on a hollow base F which is supported on removable plates G so that it can be withdrawn bodily from the oven. A packing H makes a gas-tight joint round the base, and gas is supplied to the middle tube by the nozzle L. The outflowing gases pass around the air conveying tubes E<1>, and are exhausted through the flues D. In the modified form of element shown in Fig. 4 the recuperator tubes E<1>, E<2> for two heating-flues are supported on a common base F, which is subdivided so that both air and lean gas can be preheated. The outlet nozzles I may be interchangeable.
