Abstract

Coke ovens. - Relates to regenerative coke ovens of the kind described in Specification 171,117, in which the heating- flues 17 on opposite sides of alternate ovens are connected by cross-over flues 26, and consists mainly in applying these flue arrangements to a battery having longitudinal regenerator tunnels. As shown in connection with an oven having provision for heating either by a rich or a lean gas the heating- flues in each wall are arranged in two half-wall groups, M, N having independent connections to their corresponding subjacent regenerators so that the firing of the ram side of the bench can be controlled independently of that of the. coke side. Each of the four regenerator tunnels is divided by transverse partitions 22 into compartments 18 each corresponding with a pair of similarly-functioning heating-walls, each of the outer compartments A of a transverse row being connected with its associated heating-flues through a half-sole flue 62 and ports 63, and each of the inner compartments through a pair of flues 72 and ports 73. In operating with lean gas, air and gas are heated respectively in the outer and inner compartments A, P of alternate transverse rows. and the waste gases are exhausted through all the compartments of the intermediate rows. When using rich gas, the. air is heated either in all the. compartments of alternate transverse rows, or in the outer compartments only, the inner ones then being used for the supply of diluent gas. Alternate ovens of the battery are heated on both sides by flame heat or waste gases according to the phase of operation, while the remainder are heated in both phases by flame on one, side and waste gases on the other. In a modification, the regenerator connections are so made that the two outer tunnels and the two inner ones function similarly, i.e. all the outer compartments of the transverse rows are on air or gas at the same time, while the waste gases are exhausted through all the inner compartments, and vice versa. This regenerator arrangement is also used in ovens fired bv rich gas only, each regenerator compartment being then connected with one heating-wall.
