Abstract

304,743. Koppers Co., (Assignees of Ackeren, J. van). Jan. 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Coke ovens.-In a coke oven battery each heating-wall contains two superposed groups of flues, which are connected in series with corresponding groups in an adjacent heating-wall. The two groups of flues 29, 30, open at their ends into header flues 36, 31, 39, 44, of which the two intermediate ones 31, 39 are connected to pairs of regenerator chambers 32, 33, and 40, 41 at opposite sides of the bench, while the upper and lower header flues 44, 36 are connected by end ducts 45, 37 to corresponding flues of the next heating-wall. The method of operation is such that air or gas is supplied through the regenerator chambers at one side of the bench, while the waste gases are exhausted through those at the other side. Assuming that air and gas are being supplied through the chambers 41, 40, respectively, combustion will be effected in the flues 30 of one heating-wall, and the products will pass through ducts 45 and the corresponding group of flues in the next heating-wall to the regenerators 32, 33. At the same time gas and air are being supplied to the lower group of flues in the second wall and the products from these flues pass through the side ducts 37 and the flues 29 to the regenerators 32, 33. By this arrangement, the heating-gases flow in the same direction through both sets of flues in each heating-wall, and the air and gas to be heated flow vertically upwards through the regenerators, and the waste gases vertically downwards. The ovens may be fired by rich gas supplied through nozzles 49, and in this case all the regenerator chambers are used for heating air. The nozzles 49 pass through partitions 47 in the header flues 36, 44. Each regenerator unit comprises two pairs of chambers, as shown in Fig. 3, and the supply ducts 42, 43 are branched so that each communicates with the two adjacent chambers supplying the same medium. Expansion joints 51 are provided between adjacent regenerator units, and these extend through to the end walls of the ovens.
