Coke ovens; retort furnaces.-A regenerative chamber oven adapted for the manufacture of coke or gas is heated by alternately connected groups of flues in the walls between the ovens. In the arrangements shown in Fig. 7 with four groups of flues, the first and the third, and the second and the fourth groups are connected by passages c. e<1>, and serve alternately as combustion and exit flues. Air for combustion is supplied from mains a, running lengthwise of the battery, to regenerators c, arranged either parallel with or at right angles to the mains a. In the former case a single regenerative chamber serves, as shown, all the similar groups of flues throughout the battery, and in the latter a pair of chambers is provided for each individual oven. The gas is supplied either through openings in the side walls of the combustion flues from conduits beneath the soles of the ovens, or from conduits in the same vertical planes as the heating-walls.
