[Class 51 (ii).] A heating-unit for a coke oven comprises four vertical flues 4. 5, 4<1>, 51 in series, with regenerator connections at the lower ends of the flues 4, 5<1>, and through the partition walls between the flues 4, 5, and 4<1>, 5<1>. In the oven shown in Figs. 8 and 10 adapted for heating either by preheated lean gas, or by rich gas supplied through ducts 15, 15<1>, six regenerator chambers 7, 8, 9, 7', 8<1>, 9<1> are associated with a pair of heating walls and are connected to each heating-unit through forked ducts 12, 13, 14, 12<1>, 13<1>, 14<1>. The regenerator connections are such that, with lean gas heating in one phase of operation, the whole of the air supply to a unit is delivered at the base of the flue 4 from the regenerator 9, while a part of the gas is supplied at the same point from the regenerator 8, and the remainder from the regenerator 9 through the partition wall between the flues 4, 5. The waste gases are exhausted through the corresponding connections at the other end of the unit to the regenerators 7<1>, 8<1>, 9<1>. When operating with rich gas all the inflow regenerators are used for heating air, and the gas is supplied at the base of the two upflow flues of the unit. In a modification, Fig. 4, the pairs of flues 4, 5 and 4<1>, 5<1> forming the units are in adjacent heating-walls, the flue 5 being connected to the flue 4<1> by a duct 6 in the sole of the intervening oven.
