Retort furnaces ; coke ovens.-In a retort or coke oven battery having reversible regenerators 38 arranged alongside the retorts 11 and heating- walls 12, one group of the regenerator chambers is connected directly to the tops of the vertical heating-flues 37, while the other group is connected to the bottoms through conduits 76, 86 within the heating-walls and alternating with the flues thereof. The retorts 11 are vertical, and preferably continuously operated, and the regenerators 38 are grouped in pairs R, S alternating along the length of the battery, each pair comprising chambers P, A for preheating gas and air respectively. Each chamber is in communication with two heating-walls, the connection between the chambers A and P of the groups R end the upper ends of the flues 37 being made through forked ducts 53, 63, horizontal flues 55, and ports 54, 64, while for the corresponding chambers of the groups S the connections with the bottoms of the flues are made through forked ducts 73, 83, horizontal flues 74, 84, inclined ports 75, 85, the vertical interflue conduits 76, 86, and ports 77, 87. In one phase of operation, in which air and gas are preheated in the chambers of the groups R, and the waste gases are exhausted through the chambers of the groups S, the heating-gases flow downwards in the flues 37 and upwards through the interflue conduits 76, 86, while in the other phase air and gas are supplied to the lower ends of the heating-flues through the conduits 76, 86, and the combustion products pass upwards, through the flues 37. The conduits 76, 86 are extended through the top and bottom walls to form inspection apertures, and channels 89, 90 are provided, by which coke oven gas can be supplied for use instead of preheated lean gas. The connecting flues between the regenerators and the heating-walls are accommodated in a thickened portion of the regenerator wall.
