Abstract
529,240. Furnaces. ALTENHEIN, E. F. April 4, 1939, No. 10486. [Class 51 (ii)] In the production of metal, particularly iron from ore, in which the reduction of the ore and the coking operation are carried out simultaneously in one or more vertical retorts, the products from both operations being introduced into a common furnace, two vertical reducing chambers b and one coking chamber c are mounted in masonry h above a furnace a into which the products produced in the chambers b, c are fed and the reduced ore is melted by air blown in through tuyeres. The ore is fed from a bin g into a bin e and thence into a rotary drum d where it is pre-heated by hot waste gases conducted from the flues p by a pipe j. The fuel is fed from a hopper f into the chamber c. The waste gases from the drum pass to a pipe n as well as a pipe k conveying waste gases from the heating flues p. The retorts are heated by a plurality of U-shaped horizontal flues p the heating walls q of which form the side walls of the chambers b, c, a partition wall t strengthening the structure. The internal width of the retorts may be restricted at intervals so that the charge is supported in sections.
