Charging and discharging; cooling discharged materials.-Apparatus for the distillation of coal and the production of coke comprises the combination of the preheater B and retort 1 described in Specification 324,853 with the coke-cooling device C<1> according to Specification 324,852. As in the latter specification, the combustible gases evolved by the coke in the cooling-chamber C<1> pass, together with the steam produced by quenching, into a combustion chamber D<1>, in which the gases for heating the retort are generated as described in Specification 249,236, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.].
