Abstract
227,879. Sutcliffe, E. R. July 25, 1923. Retort furnaces.- In the distillation of coal and the like superheated steam is passed through hot fuel to obtain a combustible gas which is used in part to heat the charge and in part to heat one of a number of superheaters that are alternately used for superheating the steam before admission to the charge. The steam may be mixed with or replaced by a combustible gas. Steam from an inlet k<1> passes down a heater b<1> and through the residue from the retort a which falls into a receptacle l, the combustible gas generated partly passing up through the retort and partly being burned in a combustion chamber e with air from an inlet g and admitted to a heater b. The distillation products from the retort escape through an outlet i. When the heater b<1> is cooled the process is reversed, the steam being admitted at the inlet k.
