Abstract

Fuel, feeding.-Consists in feeding the carbon residue discharged from a rotary, continuous-feed, low temperature, retort directly, or indirectly through a rotary continuous feed high temperature retort, to a destructor furnace and feeding the gases generated therein to a boiler furnace. As shown, crushed oil shale &c. is fed through a hopper c to a low temperature rotary retort a heated by a furnace b. Gases and vapours pass off by a pipe d and the solid residue is discharged at e into the hopper f of a high temperature rotary retort g heated by a furnace h and from which the gaseous products pass off by a pipe i. From an outlet j the solid residue passes into a trunk k and is conveyed to a pair of destructor furnaces l of large grate area and the gases generated therein pass through a, flue o and trunk p to a range of steam boilers q part of the gases being passed to the furnaces b, h through branched pipe t.
