Abstract
261,799. Urbana Coke Corporation, (Assignees of Parr, S. W., and Layng, T. E.). July 30, 1925, [Convention date]. Retort furnaces; charging. - Apparatus for coking coal comprises an inclined preheating chamber 4 from which the fuel is delivered to a lagged bunker 5 formed at its lower end with hoppers 24, 25, 26 communicating through valves 24<1>, 25<1>, 26<1> with externally-heated vertical retorts 1, 2, 3. The chamber 4 contains a cylinder 15 through which the fuel is fed by a screw 19 and which is heated partly by a gas or oil burner 16 and partly by the waste retort gases which are supplied by a pipe 11 having branches 12, 13, 14. The bunker 5 and chamber 4 are provided with gas outlets 21, 23 respectively. The retorts 1. 2, 3 are heated by gas or oil burners 31, 32, which deliver into heating flues 33, the gases passing over baffles 30, down flues 34, and through ports 35 into the space 36 immediately surrounding the retorts. The fuel is supplied from a bin 38, Fig. 2, to a grinder 39 from which the pulverized charge is conveyed by a hoist 41 to the hopper 17 mounted on the upper end of the preheating chamber 4.
