Abstract

376,772. Carbonizing processes; fuel. ROS, D. DE, 44, Hafton Road, Catford, London, and PATERSON, A., Bideford, Bath Road, Cippenham, near Slough, Buckinghamshire. Jan. 15, 1931, No. 1439. [Classes 50 and 55 (i).] In the carbonization of coal, shale, peat or other carbonaceous material, and the hydrogenation of the distillates, the material is passed through a shaft or retort in contact with a hot combustible gas which has been heated and electrolysed by an electric arc causing dissociation of its hydrogen. As shown in Fig. 1, the coal descends through a shaft a on to a layer of coke supplied from a hopper k on to a travelling grate b, the gas from a pipe g being dissociated by an electric arc f in a chamber e, and passing under an arch l into contact with the coal during its passage below the roof m to an outlet j. A further admission of hot gases to the tower a may be made through a duct h. In Fig. 2, the hydrogenation takes place as the material passes down a long retort a having the electrodes f and gas inlets g<1> at the bottom, the distillates escaping from an outlet j at the top, and the coke being removed by a conveyer z. The unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated to give a liquid fuel of low specific gravity, and petrol. The coke may be purified and hardened by treatment in a separate chamber with steam superheated by passage through an electric arc. Condensers p, q for heavy and light oils, are shown.
