503,183. Gasefying solid carbonaceous materials. INSTITUTION OF GAS ENGINEERS, and DENT, F. J. Oct. 12, 1937, No. 27772/38. Divided out of 491,453. [Class 55 (i)] Hydrocarbon gases are made by heating coal or other carbonizable material, without previous carbonization, in a current of hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen (e.g. water gas) at 5 atmos. or above, the temperature being 800‹ C. or higher during at least a part of the process. In examples, a semi-anthracite, and a lignite, are heated up to 800‹ C. during 1¢ hours and kept at 800‹C. during 1¢ hours, in hydrogen at 50 atmos., methane and ethane are formed, with a small quantity of unsaturated hydrocarbons.
