Abstract

271,491. Battig, R. May 20, 1926, [Convention date]. Carbon ; hydrogen.-The methane obtained by fractionation of the gas mixture liquified on separating hydrogen by low temperature treatment from the gases from coking coal and other carbonaceous materials, is decomposed into carbon and hydrogen by passage over highly heated coke. The methane may be decomposed in an upright generator containing coke heated up to 1000‹ C. or more, preferably 1300-1400‹ C., the gas being passed through from top to bottom or in the reverse manner, or in both directions alternately. Coke ovens may also be used, the heat absorbed in the decomposition cooling the coke, and the carbon produced being deposited on the coke. The gas may be supplied so that it passes evenly through the whole layer of coke, and its amount may be regulated according to the temperature of the coke. The gas obtained may be subjected to compression, cooling and liquifaction to separate the hydrogen from undecomposed methane. Specifications 1842/83, 15071/09, 158,891, and 159,823 are referred to.
