Abstract

126,997. Roth, J., and Vincent, J. L. Jan. 29, 1916, [Convention date]. Materials for making coke. - Coke for metallurgical or other purposes is made by adding to any suitable form of carbon the proportion, determined by analysis, of hydrocarbon compounds necessary to furnish the proportion of volatile matter present in natural coking coal, crushing and mixing the mass, and forming briquettes therefrom in the cold state, exposing such briquettes to the action of the air, and thereafter heating them in any suitable coking-oven. The mixture may comprise, for example, 67 to 76 per cent of gas coke dust, 8 to 10 per cent of tar 6 to 8 per cent of pitch, and 10 to 15 per cent of gas-coal dust. In some cases, the mixture may be subjected to a preliminary distillation for the recovery of by-products.
