Abstract

A mixture of lime with bituminous coal, containing about 30 to 36 per cent of volatile matter is crushed to about one-eighth-inch mesh and mixed together and coked in an ordinary coking oven with recovery of by-products. The coked mass is broken into pieces about the size of a fist or larger, and fed to the carbide furnace, preferably while still hot. If the coal is very high in volatile matter, some fixed carbon such as anthracite may be added, while if it is low in volatile matter a binder, preferably bituminous, may be added. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 14486/15.
