Abstract
547,114. Materials for making fuel briquettes ; carbonizing processes. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. July 2, 1941, No. 8360. Convention date, July 2, 1940. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] Coking coals are ground to pass a 28 mesh screen, and, prior to briquetting, are mixed with a binder comprising a mixture of from 8 to 15 per cent. sulphuric acid, and the remainder coal tar or pitch or a mixture of tar and pitch. The effect of the acidified binder is to prevent swelling during the subsequent carbonization of the briquette, the temperature rise through the plastic temperature range being at least 2 ‹C. per minute. Other inorganic acids such as nitric, and mixtures of nitric and hydrochloric acid are effective to replace the sulphuric acid. The briquettes may be carbonized in a vertical retort by the passage through the charge of coal gas, the temperature of which is raised at a rate of 2¢‹ C. per minute until the final temperature of 600‹ C.
