Abstract

494,676. Materials for making coke. ROBERTS, J. April 28, 1937, No. 12089. [Class 55 (ii)] A carbon residue adapted for use in the manufacture of electrodes, fuel or metallurgical coke is obtained by distilling tarry residues such as pitch or bitumen at temperatures not exceeding 700‹ C., crushing and mixing the product with fresh pitch, bitumen or other tar residues in a crushed state and carbonizing the mixture at a temperature exceeding 900‹ C. The semi-coke lumps of the first distillation and the added pitch &c. are preferably crushed to a size such that they will pass through a sieve of # in mesh. The high temperature distillation may be effected in horizontal or vertical retorts of small diameter, e.g. 12-16 in. The proportion of raw pitch added to the product of the first stage is preferably 10-40 per cent of the mixture.
