Abstract

694,197. Making coke. BURSTLEIN, E. M., and SOC. DES ACIER1ES DE LONGWY. Nov. 13, 1950 [Nov. 14, 1949], No. 27709/50. Class 55(ii) A process for pro d u c i n g metallurgica coke from high volatile coal comprises separa ting from the coal by grinding and sifting operations all or a par of its constituents which are rich in volatile matter and which do not soften at increased temperature, that is, the durain content, carbon izing these constituent: at low temperature grinding the semicoke produced, mixing it witl at least a portion o other constituents, tha is, the vitrain, clarain and fusain content, and carbonizing the mixture at high temperatures to form the hard coke. The raw coal is fed at A and passes through screens a, and b 1 the coal remaining on screen a, being disintegrated at D, preferably by an impact crusher, and passed through a screen a 2 to a screen b 2 . The fusain, vitrain and clarain constituents concentrate in the coal passing through screens b 1 and b 2 , which have a mesh size of 2 m.m., this material being collected in hopper vcf The material passing through screens a 1 and a 2 , which have a mesh size of 2 to 4 m.m., but remaining on screens b 1 and b 2 consists mainly of durain. This is led to a purifying plant E, where it is separated from tailings and middlings which pass to hoppers m and s, the clean durain passing into a low temperature oven C from which semi-coke is withdrawn to pass through a grinder B which reduces it to 1 m.m. size to a hopper d. The coal from hopper vcf and semi-coke from d is mixed in the required proportions in a mixer M and passed to the high - temperature coke ovens at F. If the ash content of the fusain constituent is excessive the fusain may also be separated out, Fig. 2 (not shown), and used with the middlings for steam raising or other purposes. Specifications 665,313. 680,451 and 682,028, [all in Group II], are referred to.
