Abstract

680,451. Materials for making coke. BURSTLEIN, W. M., and SOC. DES ACIERIES DE LONGWY. Nov. 8, 1949 [Dec. 27, 1948], No. 28622/49. Class 55 (ii) [Also in Group II] In the manufacture of metallurgical cokes from poorly coking coals, mineral and organic concentrates are formed and some at least of those rich in ashforming compounds or sulphur and phosphorus are removed. The vitrain concentrates are separated and the durain finely ground, a coking blend of the required petrographic composition being prepared by mixing predetermined proportions of other organic concentrates with the ground durain suitably adjusted as to size distribution. In a modification concentrates rich in vitrain and clarain are mixed and carbonized after removal of mineral constituents. Crushed coal or fines is subjected to separation on superposed vibrating screens a, b, c, d to obtain five graded fractions. The finest dust passing screen d and comprising fusain and oxidized coal is burnt in boiler furnaces C. Fraction c-d comprising vitrain and clarain is passed to a cleaner E<SP>3</SP> to remove sedimentary minerals and then to a coking oven F. Fraction b-c comprising vitrain, clarain and durain is similarly passed through cleaner E<SP>2</SP> and a mixer V, or it may be ground more finely in a mill B and passed through a final separating screen sf before being coked. Fractions a-b consisting of durain is passed through cleaner E<SP>1</SP> and then to mill B. The oversize of screen a comprising the natural conglomerate is shattered in a disintegrator D yielding on secondary screens e, f, g, h fractions treated similarly to those of the primary separation. The cleaners may comprise pneumatic tables or effect removal of shale &c. by dense or moving liquids. The middlings may be sent by a conveyer M to the boilers. In a modification each of the concentrates from the separator screens may be separately cleaned. An existing plant with two grinding mills may be adapted by one of the mills being operated at reduced speed to effect the disintegration, three separating stages with or without a cleaning stage being provided. Or a plant with a single separator and grinding mill may be utilised. Specification 665,313, [Group II], is referred to.
