Abstract
391,975. Materials for making coke. M E R K E L, G., 53, Hiltensbergerstrasse, Munich, Germany. April 30, 1932, No. 12505. Convention date, May 1, 1931. [Class 55 (ii).] Smokeless briquettes are made by mixing non-caking fuels such as anthracite, semi-coke bituminous coals, lignites, &c. in granular form with finely ground caking coal and briquetting with just such an amount of binder, e.g. pitch, as to render the briquettes resistant to stresses before and during coking whilst embedded in neutral refractory material such as small coke. The distillation temperature may vary from 600-1000‹ C. The binder, e.g. 1-2 per cent of pitch, is desirably ground with the caking coal which is preferably gas coal containing 28- 38 per cent of volatiles. Or the binder may be liquefied and brought in the form of a mist into contact with the caking coal. About 10 per cent of caking coal is used with poor fuel while material richer in volatiles require 20-25 per cent or more. Specifications 27167/13, [Class 50, Fuel, Manufacture of], and 294,581, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], are referred to.
