Abstract

783,373. Material for making coke. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORPORATION. Aug. 22, 1955, No. 24116/55. Addition to 737,063. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2) In a method of producing foundry coke there is formed a mixture of between 40-65 per cent by weight petroleum coke having a volatile content between 5 and 14 per cent and preferably 8 and 12 per cent by weight, 5-15 per cent anthracite, a hydrocarbon pitch binder in an amount between 4 to 2 : 1 and 2 to 1 : 1 (pitch : anthracite ratios) based on the amount of anthracite at the 5 and 15 per cent levels, respectively, the amount of pitch within the ratios increasing as the amount of anthracite increases and the balance a swelling bituminous coal having a volatile content between 14 and 22 per cent and preferably between 16 to 20 per cent, at least 90 per cent of the mixture passing a “ inch screen, and the mixture is coked at between 1800-2300‹ F. The hydrocarbon pitch may be a coal tar pitch or petroleum pitch having a melting point between 300‹ and 400‹ F. The anthracite is ground to 25 per cent less than 40 mesh per linear inch and preferably to less than 100 mesh per linear inch. In an example a mixture of 60 per cent petroleum coke (12 per cent volatile matter), 14 per cent coal tar pitch, 18 per cent bituminous coal (18 per cent volatile matter) and 8 per cent anthracite was coked at 2000-2100‹ F. for 20 hours.
