Abstract

779,218. Coking. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE..June 21,1955 [Sept. 21, 1954], No. 17989/55. Class 55 (2). A metallurgical coke is produced from pulverized substantially non-fusible coal having a high content of volatile materials mixed in preponderating quantity with a pulverized fusible coal of substantially smaller grain size. The pyrogenation temperature of the non- fusible coal is so much lower than that of the fusible coal that when the latter resolidifies following pyrogenation, the protocoke formed from the substantially non-fusible coal has completed its rapid phase of contraction.. The grain size of the non-fusible coal may be from one hundred to one thousand times by weight that of the fusible coal. In an example, the non-fusible coal'contains 40 per cent of volatile material and has a crucible swelling index of " 0," the grain size being 2-3 mm. The coals are mixed in the proportion of 60 to 40 per cent. In a further example, the fusible component is a mixture of equal parts of coking coal with 25 per cent volatiles and a swelling index of " 9 " and a fat coal A containing 35 per cent volatile material and having a swelling index of " 8." The non-fusible coal may be moistened with oil or water, and the fusible coal dried, before mixing to form the coking blend.
