To prepare a coal blend, e.g. to modify its coking qualities, raw coal, anthracite, or coal which has been oxidized or devolatilized in some degree is mixed with coking coal in such proportion that the agglutinating value of the blend (B.S.S. 705/1936) is less than 6 and preferably is not more than 5. In an example, a steam coal having an agglutinating value of about 13 is crushed and heated in air at 370‹ C. for 20 minutes. A blend with 40 per cent. of untreated coal is briquetted with 7 per cent. of pitch and carbonized.
