Abstract

In a process for briquetting bituminous coals a finely divided bituminous coal having a swelling index of at least B.S. 5 is heat-oxidized to reduce the swelling index to a value above B.S. 1 and then mixed and reacted with crude tar or a distillation fraction thereof until the swelling index of the mixture is reduced to at least B.S. 2 1/2 , the resulting product being then mixed with a carbonaceous binder, e.g. pitch, and briquetted. The heat-oxidation may be effected at a temperature within the plastic range of the coal as described in Specification 724,774. The amount of coal tar or a distillation fraction thereof added to the oxidized coal may be between 5 and 15% by weight of the coal and 1-2% by weight of quicklime may also be added to effect a further reduction of the swelling index. The time allowed for the oxidized coal and the coal tar or a distillation fraction thereof to react may be between 5 and 10 minutes. The briquettes may be used in their raw state or subjected to carbonization. Specification 864,737 also is referred to.
