Abstract

In a process for briquetting particulate materials such as iron ore dusts, or other minerals using a binder consisting of a mixture of coal tar pitch and a coal which in the presence of pitch fuses at a temperature below that at which it fuses in the absence of pitch, there is formed at a temperature of 250 DEG -450 DEG C. a mixture of the binder and heated particulate material in such a way that the temperature of the binder coal is rapidly raised by contact with the heated particulate material to between 250 DEG and 450 DEG C. While volatile matter evolved from the pitch and/or the binder coal is maintained in contact with the particulate material during mixing, the thus formed mixture being briquetted p in e.g. a double roll press immediately after leaving the mixer. The binder coal and the pitch may be added separately to the heated particulate material or they may be first mixed together before being mixed with the particulate material. Suitable binder coals are caking coals of Rank No's 200, 300, 400, 500 or 600 and the pitch may be a hard or soft pitch.
