Abstract
A method for the manufacture of briquettes wherein a mixture in particulate form of one or more reducible inorganic compounds and a carbonaceous material is heated rapidly under uniform heating conditions to a temperature between 350 DEG and 550 DEG C. and the mixture is subsequently briquetted while still hot without introducing any additional binding material. The reducible inorganic compound consists of an oxide or a sulphide or any other reducible compound of iron, lead, tin, copper or other metal or potassium or calcium carbonate, provided that the compound can be heated to 350 DEG to 550 DEG C. without fusing or vaporizing. The carbonaceous material consists of coal, lignite, peat, coal char or mixtures thereof having a carbon content of at least 50% on a dry free ash basis. The proportion by weight of reducible inorganic compound to carbonaceous material lies between 1:3 and 3:1. The mixture is heated while in the form of a fluid bed for a period not exceeding twenty minutes.
