Abstract
Iron oxide fines are briquetted by pelletizing a mixture of the fines with 5-15% by weight of a bituminous coal binder and water sufficient to form pellets, the size of which pellets are determined by the largest particles in the fines, the coal particles being of smaller size than the pellets, heating the pellets to an apparent temperature of 600-800 DEG F., and briquetting the pellets while their temperature is in this range in a briquetting press. A flux selected from limestone, dolomite and mixtures thereof may be added to the mixture. The iron oxide and flux particles may be minus 1/4 -inch particle size and the coal particles minus 8 mesh (U.S. Standard). The pelletizing device may be a disc or drum type and the briquettes may be formed on a roll-type press under a load of 30,000 to 65,000 pounds per linear inch of effective roll width. The pellets may be heated in a direct gas-fired kiln and fed to the briquetting press through a heat-insulated shoot. The briquettes may be carried out of contact with air to a cooler.
