Abstract

In a process for briquetting particulate carbonaceous material without the use of a binder the material is converted into a char in a first zone by heating to a temperature between 350 DEG and 500 DEG C. and then after withdrawal from the first zone is further heated to increase the temperature of the hot char, the char finally being briquetted at the increased temperature. The conversion to a char may take 15-30 minutes and the further heating for 2-5 seconds or 1-5 minutes raising the temperature of the char by 15-25 DEG C. and 5-15 DEG C. respectively. The first heat treatment may be carried out in a fluidized state while the further heating may be effected by entrainment in a hot inert gas, by external heating or by chemical reaction. The carbonaceous material may be coal, lignite or peat and the hot char may be briquetted in a double roll press.
