Abstract

Smokeless briquettes are made from weakly-caking or non-caking coals by subjecting the coal in particulate form to a thermal treatment, within the temperature range 370 DEG -500 DEG C., either entrained in a gaseous stream or in a fluidized bed, the hot char so made being thereafter briquetted without substantial loss of temperature. The char is heated for less than an hour, e.g. ten minutes, or for a period such that not more than one half of the volatile contents are driven off. The hot briquettes are cooled in a controlled manner in an atmosphere containing a predetermined amount of oxygen and are subsequently heated to a temperature within the range 850 DEG -1000 DEG C.
