Abstract
1293898 Coking coal INSTITUT NEORGANICHESKOI KHIMII I ELEKTRO-KHIMII AKADEMII NAUK GRUZINSKOI SSR 28 Jan 1970 4062/70 Heading C5E Metallurgical coke is made by moulding ground coal (i.e. up to 3 mm. grain size) at a temperature in the range from 20‹ to 350‹ C. to form briquettes, caking the briquettes at a temperature in the range 450‹ to 600‹ C. under the pressure of the vapours and gases of thermal decomposition of the coal, and calcining the caked briquettes at a temperature in the range 750‹ to 950‹ C. The pressure may be up to 20 atmos. gauge, and the temperature rise during the caking stage may be from 2‹ to 6‹ C. per minute. In an illustrated embodiment (not shown) the ground coal is fed to a furnace containing a horizontal conveyer bearing moulds, compacted to a density of from 0À9 to 1À1 gm./ cm.<SP>3</SP>, and caked in the furnace, e.g. by electric heaters or by gas, the caked briquettes being tipped into a. shaft furnace for being calcined. If the moulding temperature is up to 100‹ C., water or steam may be added to the coal to raise its moisture content to 15 to 18%; if above 100‹ C., the coal may be impregnated with the products of thermal decomposition of the coal.
