Abstract

1,256,576. Coking coal. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 4 Sept., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 43823/69. Heading C5E. A continuous process for making shaped coke from ground coal made into pellets or briquettes with a binder, optionally with ore and/or lime, comprises treating the pellets &c. in three temperature stages in series. In the first stage the pellets are moved concurrently with a fine grained heat carrier, preferably sand, which is at a temperature of 500‹ to 600‹ C., for 2 to 5 minutes. In the second and third stages the pellets are moved transversely or in countercurrent to a fine grained heat carrier. The temperature of this heat carrier rises from an initial temperature in the range 400‹ to 500‹ C. to a final one of 500‹ to 600‹ C., and the contact time is 30 to 90 minutes, in the second stage, whilst the temperature in the third stage rises from an initial 550‹ to 650‹ C. to a final 850‹ to 1000‹ C. The process may be performed in two rotary retorts, see Figure (not shown), if sand is the carrier, or in a shaft furnace if gas is used. Sillimanite, corundum or coke may be used as the heat carrier instead of sand.
