Abstract

A process for producing steel comprises heating a mixture of ore and solid or liquid fuel to 800-1150 DEG C. to carbonise the fuel and partially or completely reduce the ore, and feeding the treated mixture to a Siemens-Martin furnace. The fuel may be non-coking coal, coal sludge, brown coal, or lignite and ore and fuel may be briquetted. When a geologically young coal is used it may be carbonised before briquetting. The ore may be a fine grained ore, or a low quality ore e.g. flue dust, ore dust, roasted pyrite, or red mud. The reduction may be carried out to produce sponge iron which may then be subjected to a dressing operation, e.g. magnetic separation. The gases produced during reduction may be used to heat the Siemens-Martin furnace.
