Abstract
A method of producing iron and other metals from their ores in a shaft furnace comprises charging the furnace with ore and dense, rigid, coal briquettes having sufficient volatile matter to produce hydrogen and which do not stick together or crack when subjected to high temperature dry distillation, and effecting rapid smelting with an increased ore rate or decreased rate of charging the briquettes. The briquettes may be prepared by preparing powdered noncaking coal, slightly oxidized coal, or both as a major constituent and powdered caking coal as a minor constituent, heating the mixture to 380-480 DEG C., and press-forming to produce the briquettes.
