Abstract

Iron-containing powdered ferrous products are compacted in the form of balls or blocks by first completely reducing a binding powdered mixture of finely-divided at least partly oxidised ferrous metal particles (e.g. rolling-mill scales or highly oxidised cast-iron turnings containing at least 70% iron by weight) and carbonaceous residues (e.g. coal or coke dust) in a furnace at a temperature of 900 DEG to 1150 DEG C., e.g. for 1/2 to 4 hours, under either an autogenous reducing atmosphere or one of carbon monoxide gas, cooling the binding reduced mixture under the same atmosphere, forming in the presence of water an aqueous mixture of the powdered ferrous product to be compacted, such as dry ore fines, and of the binding reduced mixture, and finally moulding the aqueous mixture into balls or blocks.
