Abstract
A process for preparing a product for use in iron refining comprises continuously reducing iron oxide fines to remove 70-94% of the oxygen and agglomerating the product without reoxidation. Iron oxide, e.g. iron ore, of a size 3/8 inch or finer may be partially reduced in a fluidized bed by hydrogen, carbon monoxide or a mixture thereof, to FeO with traces of higher oxides and iron and the produced oxide further reduced in a second fluidized bed until the oxygen has been reduced to 5-15% on a gangue-free basis. The waste gas from the second fluidized bed may be used for the first partial reduction. The product of the second process, i.e. iron and FeO, may be briquetted and used in place of scrap in iron refining processes.
