Abstract

1359882 Upgrading Ti ores LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 3241/71 Headings C1N and C1A Iron is removed from an ore containing Ti and Fe oxides by mixing the ore with carbon to give a carbon content in the mixture of 20-40 wt. per cent, and treating the mixture in a fluidized bed at 800-1000‹ C. with a gas containing 20- 50% Cl 2 and 0-10% O 2 by vol. A heating gas, e.g. O 2 may be injected into the base of the reactor and the Cl 2 -containing gas half way up, at the bottom of an expanded section. The treatment gas may contain N 2 and may be preheated by contact with the product. The proportions of reactants are preferably such as to give FeCl 2 and CO 2 in the off-gases. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously.
