Abstract

The proportion of titanium in an iron containing titanium ore, especially ilmenite is increased by a process comprising fluidizing a first bed of said ore containing at least 25% by weight of iron (as ferric oxide) at at least 800 DEG C. with a gas comprising carbon monoxide and chlorine and optionally also an inert gas to assist fluidization, passing the ferric chloride vapour, thus produced through a second bed of finely divided inert material at a temperature of at least 700 DEG C. fluidized with oxygen or a molecular oxygen containing gas and recovering from the first bed, continuously or intermittently, material containing an increased proportion of titanium, and recovering ferric oxide from the second bed, either as an accretion on the particles thereof, or entrained in the effluent gases. The example illustrates with reference to a drawing (not shown) the use of a baffle in the first reactor to prevent backmixing.
