Abstract
1456031 Conversion of metal chlorides to metal oxides METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 4 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 56236/73 Heading C1A Metal chlorides are converted to oxides by forming a bed of the metal oxide particles at least 350 mm. deep (when static) fluidized by introducing a free-O 2 -containing gas and fuel so that the velocity of all the gases traversing the bed is determined by the equation 0À34 #<SP>0À9</SP># W G #0À56 #<SP>0À9</SP> where W G is the velocity calculated on the cross-section of the chamber in the absence of the bed and # is the density of the metal oxide, the pressure drop across the bed being 1200-2400 mm. of water, the metal chloride being introduced at least 250 mm. above the grate, the bed temperature being between that at which the chloride reacts or the fuel ignites and that at which the oxides sinter, and withdrawing oxide granules below the entry point of the chlorides. The bed may be kept at a substantially constant level and at 800-1100‹ C. The feed may be a used pickle bath. When Fe 2 O 3 is the product W G may be 1À5-2À5 m/sec., the bed height 350-750 mm. and its temperature 800‹ C. The effluent gas may be passed through a cyclone to remove fine particles, which may be re-cycled to the bed, then through a venturi scrubber in contact with the feed liquor and finally through a washer to absorb HCl. NiO is also exemplified.
