Abstract

1476963 Calcium oxide production F SCHOPPE 31 May 1974 24313/74 Heading ClA A process for the continuous production of particulate surface-active, calcium oxide from starting material which comprises calcium carbonate and which is in finely ground form or in the form of a sludge or other fluid-like state, comprises calcination of said calcium carbonate in the presence of preheated air and fuel, wherein the material is dispersed in a state of suspension in a chamber in an upwardly directed gas flow, the ratio of free oxygen to fuel being between 1À2 and 2À5 with respect to the stoichiometric, at least a substantial proportion of the particles of starting material being heated to calcining temperature at a rate of more than 400‹ C. per second and the calcium oxide produced thereby being drawn off from the upper end of the chamber together with the hot gas flow after a residence time in the chamber of less than one second. The starting material is preferably preheated, at a temperature at which it will react, to obtain a heated, particulate conveyable dry material. The starting material may be blown into the chamber using process waste. Air is introduced into the calcining chamber preferably at 1000- 1400‹ C. and the ratio of free O 2 present is preferably between 1À6 to 2À0 with respect to the stoichiometric.
