Abstract
1504320 Controlling operation of shaft kiln ROUND ROCK LIME CO 2 May 1975 [6 May 1974] 18461/75 Heading F4B In a process for heat treating particulate material in a vertical kiln of the kind described in Specification 1,475,574, the distribution of the air supply at the different levels 42, 44, 46 is controlled by regulating the air supply at the bottom level 42 in accordance with the oxygen content of the waste gases measured at 37. The level of charge in the furnace is maintained constant, and the rate at which the charge passes through the furnace is controlled according to the pressure difference measured between points 74 and 78 in the reaction zone by controlling the rate of operation of the grate. The temperature of the fuel gas is maintained constant by regulating the operation of a heat exchanger 25 so that the heat input is more easily controlled. In a modification, Fig. 4, the grate operates at a constant rate, and the pressure difference controls the fuel and air supply, heat exchangers 33, 25 maintaining a constant air and gas temperature to facilitate the fuel/air supply control. The oxygen content of the waste gases controls the air distribution. In another modification (Fig. 5) the oxygen content of the waste gases as well as the pressure difference across the reaction zone is used to control the overall air supply. The kiln may be used to burn limestone or to process oil-shale.
