Abstract

1,003,158. Funnel kilns. L. S. POURSIN. May 7, 1962 [Oct. 17, 1961], No. 17544/62. Heading F4B. Agglomerated materials containing combustible matter, such as coal shale bricks, are fired at least partly by the heat of combustion of the incorporated fuel, the bricks being preheated to initiate combustion of the fuel, all the incorporated fuel being at least partly burst without the temperature exceeding that at which the bricks sinter by injecting air or steam on to the bricks to produce producer gas or water gas which is burnt in the presence of the bricks, and the fired bricks are cooled. The bricks, stacked on trucks 15, move through the preheating zone in countercurrent to the gases delivered from flue 30. In the firing zone, the bricks move in the same direction as the gases, which are delivered from flues 31, 32, 33 to a waste heat boiler or other heat recovery plant. In the cooling zone, air from fan 42 flows in countercurrent to the bricks and is withdrawn through passages 43, 44 to be fed to air inlets in the reaction or preheating zones. The zones are separated by steam curtains, and the temperature distribution within the firing zone is controlled by regulating the air supply and steam supply to balance the exothermic producer gas reaction and the endothermic water gas reaction.
