Abstract

1,181,647. Coking coal. PEABODY COAL CO. 9 Dec., 1968, No. 58450/68. Heading C5E. In a method of coking coal in which the coal is combusted in a first stage, e.g. as a bed on a horizontal travelling grate, and the product from this stage is discharged into a vertical shaft furnace, the first stage is carried out under air-starvation conditions (so that the product typically contains about 7% to 10% b.w. volatiles), and a zone of burning volatiles is formed at the top of the shaft through which succeeding product must pass. The bed temperature at the end of the grate is 1400 to 1600‹ F. and in the zone of burning about 2000‹ to 2500‹ F. An inert gas is circulated via a heat exchanger (for heating air delivered to the underneath of the grate) through the lower portion of the coke in the shaft to cool the coke, and hot combustion gases and unreacted volatiles from above the bed and from the shaft go to a boiler combustion chamber.
