Abstract

A method of preparing a self-fluxing iron ore for use as a substitute for scrap comprises at least partly reducing a finely divided ore by gaseous reduction in a fluidized bed, agglomerating the reduced ore without reoxidation, and coating the agglomerates with lime, the final composition of the agglomerates being 1-30% lime, up to 10% gangue, and the balance reduced or partly reduced iron ore. From 1-20% of lime, which may be as limestone or dolomite, may be mixed with the ore before the latter is added to the reducing vessel and preheated to 1600 DEG to 1900 DEG F., or it may be added to the reducing vessel. The reduced ore is cooled, agglomerated, and coated with lime, which may be moistened with water or oil, by tumbling. The product is stated to be satisfactory as an addition to the charge in steel making.
